Public Art for Neighborhoods Selection Committee

This is Round 3 of the Public Art for Neighborhoods Grant's for 2024. Here is the roster of applicants and a brief description of their project(s): @MirrorIndy

@mirrorindy The Indy Arts Council Public Art for Neighborhoods Committee has a Mayoral appointee, independent curator Sarah Urist Green and City-Council appointees John Barth and artist Amy Carroll. @mirrorindy

Lee Riley Evans is chairman of the committee and called the meeting to order at 4:40 p.m. Old business included sharing that the fund balance is $0.

A meeting was held in September to add a representative of Develop Indy to the group.

Project installations currently in process are TWG and the Buckingham at 96th st.

Eagle Library, Aspire Higher Foundation, The Tribe Youth Foundation, MLK Center/Tarkington Park, Tag! You're It, are a few of the completed PAFN grant honorees.

22 grants applications were received this time. Streetcorner Canvases Partnership Program received $15,000 in funds for traffic signal box Art. A $7,500 grant was donated by MIBOR.

Developer Public Art Plan is being discussed by staff members of Elanco and their new world headquarters. They have met with artists and are imagining art with connections to all forms of water and how it moves through the communities.

Mindy Taylor of Art Strategies shared the vision in greater detail of why water is the chosen theme. She helped curate the Cultural Trail, and other installations around Indy. Working with Elanco on the water-themed Public Art is a very important project involving many artists.

"Water in Dripping" relating to the White River will be an extension of White River State Park when complted.

Elanco received 64M and are required to spend 1%, or $640,00 in "tif" funds on this type of project

Committee voted, and all 7 members voted to approve, a unanimous decision.

TWG's John McCain presented "Echoes of Heritage" project for installation at 18th and Meridian. This building includes housing units, retail and restaurant spaces to be enhanced by this interactive work. Several artists were considered, but Jerome Guff has been chosen.

Magistrate Design is Mr. Guff's firm, and he is proposing an art deco style bench concept for the 18th and Meridian St. corner. This represents the history of transportation in that area from the 1920's to present day with the Red Line access.

The goal is to have the project completed by June 2025. Budget of $43,930 that includes artist's fee and creation. This project will be ADA accessible and available to all.

The committee voted on the project, and the proposal has been unanimously approved.

Grant applications are being accepted for area projects from the community. Applications can be reviewed and evaluated at and grants awarded the week of October 28th. indyarts.org

Community applications are being prioritized from low-income Neighborhoods. Amounts requested can be up to $5,000. There are currently 9 applications to review at this meeting. First applicant, Ashley Robinson, is focusing on Frederick Douglass Park in Martindale-Brightwood.

Julie Xiao is the next applicant for the Fort Ben Library branch. The next application is from Sound Ecoligies at University Heights United Methodist Church. Friends of Skiles Test Nature Park, Garfield Park Neighbors' Association, International District Community Center,

Flanner House/Ujamaa Bookstore, Morehead Community Resource Center, and Indianapolis Downtown Inc. Round out tonight's review. The next meeting to review applications is November 6th. More information can be found at or Julie Moore at jmoore@indyarts.org indyarts.org
